about

I wrote and recorded a version of this song in 2020 when I was working on my first album, Long Division, and hated pretty much everything about it except the guitar solo. I rewrote the lyrics to be sort of vaguely pandemic-related but, really, I wanted to capture a sense of loneliness and nostalgia in general and also the idea that I bring loneliness upon myself ("Excommunicated, dissidents and haters, no exceptions allowed.").

The song's chorus is produced and mixed in a way that's supposed to harken back to 1960s UK psych/rock. I think the harmonies and guitar tone are the main drivers behind this. It took me forever to decide that this track should be the opener, but now I absolutely love it as the opening track; it's fairly inviting and warm, grooves nicely, conveys a sense of melancholy that carries through the album, and introduces guitars that I think are central to my sound.

lyrics

All my friends
Don't believe I'll see them again
It's been hard and
It seems we're parting ways
I'm an emotional wreck

Common ground
Saying our goodbyes to it now
Excommunicated
Dissidents and haters
No exceptions allowed

Cold outside
Memories heating up in my mind
Racing to catch up with the times
Staking out some new battle lines

You receive a song like this
It's knocking at your door

Dropbox JIm
Searching for that miracle win
Then he heard those voices
Harmonizing to the sound of the wind

Lauren Lou
Know that I remember you too
You pulled up like a
Sophomore crush
We touched beneath the
Shimmering moon

Cold outside
Memories heating up in my mind
Racing to catch up with the times
Staking out some new battle lines
